Air Polishing and Scaling

Biofilm is a complex 3 dimensional structure that develops and attaches to teeth and gums to provide  a safe haven for oral microorganisms.  It is highly resistant to conventional antimicrobials and mechanical removal. Its removal is important in protecting against tooth decay, gum disease and other systemic problems arising from compromised oral health.
The process of biofilm elimination is the sequential removal of its  components  by identification (with the naked eye or using disclosing agents) then application of an air abrasive powder/ polisher to remove the stain, plaque and calculus.
Following the air polishing step, the plaque (soft, sticky texture) and calculus (hard, rugged texture) are removed from under the gum with a specialized nozzle and, if required, ultrasonic scaling with a specialized tip.
